The Penny Meditation
The Penny Meditation
How Are You Spending Your Penny Today? A Spiritual Lesson That Changed My Life
Some years ago, I attended a guided meditation at my local Spiritualist church. While the entire experience was beautiful, the final part of the meditation has stayed with me ever since. It has become one of the most meaningful spiritual messages I have ever received, and I share it whenever I have the opportunity.
Serving Spiritualist churches has given me a wonderful platform to talk about my spiritual experiences, and today I would like to share this one with you.
A Meeting with My Spirit Guide
Halfway through the meditation, I found myself meeting a loved one at the top of a hill. After spending some time together, I was instructed to walk down the hill where I would be met by a guide.
As I descended, I was greeted by a man dressed in flowing white robes. He had long white hair and a beard, and his presence felt calm, wise, and comforting. I now know him as Jacob, one of my spirit guides, who has remained with me ever since that day.
Jacob reached into his hand and gave me a bright, shiny penny.
“This penny,” he explained, “will buy you one day on the Earth plane.”
I looked at him, curious about what he meant.
He went on to explain that each day of our lives is like a blank canvas. We are given a fresh opportunity every morning to create whatever picture we choose. Every thought, feeling, reaction, and choice becomes a brushstroke in that day’s masterpiece.
He described each moment as being like coloured wool passing through a loom. Row by row, moment by moment, we weave the picture of our day. The colour of each thread is determined by the energy we choose to bring into that moment.
Would it be happiness?
Gratitude?
Love?
Excitement?
Serenity?
Or perhaps fear, anger, sadness, or worry?
Each choice contributes to the overall picture we create.
By the end of the day, the canvas is complete—a reflection of how we spent our precious penny.
The Bag of Pennies
As I absorbed the lesson, Jacob reached into his pocket once more and pulled out a small hessian bag.
As he handed it to me, I could feel that it was full of coins.
“You might as well have this too,” he said with a smile. “It’s the rest of your pennies. When the bag is empty, you’re coming home.”
The simplicity of those words carried a profound truth.
None of us knows how many pennies remain in our bag. We don’t know how many days we have left on this earthly journey. What we do know is that every penny is precious.
Every day matters.
Every moment matters.
Finding Pennies Everywhere
Since that meditation, pennies seem to appear in the most unexpected places.
I find them on pavements, in car parks, tucked into odd corners, and sometimes in places that make me laugh out loud.
One memorable day, I picked up my boyfriend’s jeans to put them in the wash. A penny fell straight out of the pocket and landed directly on my big toe! I simply had to take a photograph.
Another appeared in the seal of the washing machine.
I could list countless examples, and every single one brings a smile to my face.
For me, these pennies have become gentle reminders from Spirit. Whenever one appears, I hear the same question:
“How are you spending your penny today?”
A Daily Spiritual Reminder
Whenever I find myself worrying about a bill, stressing over something beyond my control, or becoming caught up in life’s small frustrations, I remember the lesson of the penny.
I pause and ask myself whether this situation is truly worthy of spending my precious energy on.
In the grand scheme of things, many of our worries are fleeting. They occupy our minds, consume our attention, and colour our day with shades we may not have consciously chosen.
When I remember the penny, I choose differently.
I choose to focus on what matters.
I choose gratitude over worry.
Presence over fear.
Love over frustration.
Because I know I only have so many pennies, and I do not want to waste a single one.
How Are You Spending Your Penny?
One of the loveliest things about sharing this story is hearing from people who begin finding pennies of their own after becoming aware of its message.
Whether these pennies come from Spirit, coincidence, or simply a heightened awareness, they often arrive at exactly the right moment.
Perhaps they serve as a reminder that today is a gift.
A reminder that every day is a blank canvas.
A reminder that we are the artists of our own experience.
So if a penny happens to find its way to you, I would love to hear about it.
How did it appear?
What was happening in your life at the time?
And most importantly…
How are you spending your penny today?
Namaste xx
